As we debated the value of rising early during the rainy season to witness the sunrise at Angkor, we can confidently say we would do it again without hesitation. It was truly a magical experience. However, to ensure that this moment is as perfect as possible, there are several factors to consider in advance. This post will outline those key points.
The best time to see a sunrise in Cambodia
Theoretically, Cambodia offers stunning sunrises and sunsets year-round, but your chances of witnessing a beautiful sunrise are significantly better outside the monsoon season. From November to April, you're more likely to experience clear skies for sunrise viewing. The rainy season runs from May to October, and during this time, the weather can be unpredictable. It's worth noting that rain and clouds can also occasionally appear during the dry season.
How to get to Angkor Wat’s Sunrise
To witness the breathtaking sunrise at Angkor Wat, you have three distinct options:
Join a Tour
Experience the sunrise through a guided tour, which eliminates the hassle of planning. A guide will take you to the best vantage point for sunrise and assist you in capturing stunning photos. This is also a fantastic way for solo travelers to meet others. You can book these tours at local travel agencies or online through platforms like GetYourGuide.
Go with a Driver
Another option is to hire a driver to pick you up from your accommodation in the morning and take you to the sunrise location. This choice is ideal for couples or groups who value privacy and flexibility. Driver prices and languages spoken can vary. We chose Mr. Chan, who is fluent in English and Spanish. He currently prefers guiding Spanish-speaking guests to Angkor. You can find his Facebook page for more information.
Rent a Scooter
You can also rent a scooter in Siem Reap the day before your visit and ride it to Angkor Wat. This option provides maximum flexibility and is perfect for experienced riders, solo travelers, couples, or friends traveling together. However, keep in mind that you’ll need to navigate and find parking. Rental prices typically range from $10 to $20 per day.
Extra Tip: Before your first ride, inspect the scooter carefully and take photos of any existing scratches or dents to document its condition.

Where Should You Stay?
Since sunrise occurs very early in the morning, it’s wise to seek accommodation in and around Siem Reap. If you want to experience local life in Cambodia, aim for a place in the city center. However, if proximity to the Angkor Archaeological Park is your priority, there are several resorts and hotels just outside the city center.
Later in this article, I’ll recommend a few suitable accommodation options.
Purchase Your Ticket in Advance
Where to Buy Your Ticket: You can purchase tickets at Angkor Enterprise, located on Street 60 in Krong Siem Reap, or online (link not affiliated).
It’s best to buy your ticket the day before your visit. The ticket office opens at 4:45 PM, and arriving early is advisable as it tends to get crowded. Tickets go on sale at 5 PM.
Decide beforehand how many days you plan to explore Angkor, as options include one, three, or seven days. Make sure to join the correct line, as each ticket type has a designated queue.
When Should You Start?
Plan to arrive at Angkor Wat by 5 AM at the latest. If you’re staying in Siem Reap, this means waking up around 4:30 AM. While it might feel challenging, trust me—experiencing the stunning sunrise over Angkor Wat is worth every lost minute of sleep.
